History

The Gunbar was in Darwin Harbour 19 February 1942. Gunbar was the first vessel attacked during the first raid in which Ordinary Seaman Herbert John Shepherd (F3384) was injured. He died of his wounds on 22 February 1942 and was buried at sea. After discharging 5 of the 8 other wounded Gunbar stood by the stricken MV Portmar and succeeded in evacuating the crew of that vessel. The Captain and the remainder of the wounded crew then obtained medical treatment for themselves.,
