Description

This book describes the rise and fall between 1879 and 1889 of the first real trial of large-scale agricultural production in the Northern Territory. It investigates the attempt there to establish sugar plantations and tells a story of heroic yet misguided efforts. Based on wide research, 'Broken Dreams and Broken Promise' explains how the failure of the sugar industry had a significant impact on the Territory's subsequent history. Ian Mackintosh Hillock has long experience in conservation and land management in tropical Australia. 'Broken Dreams and Broken Promise' is based on his Northern Territory University Master of Education thesis.,
