This report summarises marine megafauna (cetaceans, dugongs and marine turtles) strandings throughout the Northern Territory (NT), from 1st January 2018 to 31st December, 2018. Stranding records were obtained from a range of sources, including direct reports to Marine WildWatch, Aboriginal sea ranger groups and other organisations (Northern Prawn Fishery Industry, NT Fisheries, the Australian Border Force and Tangaroa Blue Foundation).
Overall, 146 strandings were recorded in 2018, including: 113 marine turtles, eight dolphins, 18 whales and seven dugongs. Marine turtle strandings consisted of five species, and the cetaceans consisted of three known and one unconfirmed species. Net entanglement remain the most common cause of stranding injuries and mortalities. Other causes of stranding injuries and mortalities were related to natural factors (predation and poor health), as well as human interactions. Strandings in the NT remain relatively low compared to other jurisdictions nationally. Collaborative partnerships and public interest across the NT are improving the accuracy of strandings reported.,
