Description
The rural blocks in the Florina Rd. area, 10 km southwest of Katherine mostly utilise aquifers in the Jinduckin Formation, a geological unit within the Daly Basin sequence. This reconnaissance study has related aquifers to specific parts of the stratigraphic sequence and has mapped the regional structure of the aquifers. Recharge and discharge areas have been identified and the pattern of groundwater flow mapped.
A series of dolostone and sandstone beds form fractured and karstic aquifers, which are thin but laterally extensive. Siltstone beds comprise the bulk of the formation and these form hydraulic barriers between individual aquifers and from the underlying Tindall aquifer. Artesian conditions occur in a zone adjoining the Katherine River.
Recharge occurs in the outcrop/subcrop areas of the aquifers. Groundwater flows from the northwest and west towards a section of the Katherine River and its tributaries where it discharges as seeps and springs.
Bores yield up to 20 L/s but most bores are constructed for smaller domestic supplies. Elevated concentrations of sulfate and fluoride limit the use of groundwater for human consumption and to a lesser extent for stock.
In order to quantify the resource more rigorously, groundwater level monitoring should resume. A program of stream gauging to determine the baseflow contributed from the Jinduckin Formation aquifers is also recommended.,
