Description

Mounting development pressures in the Daly River region of the Northern Territory require an assessment of environmental conditions to be made, with particular attention to water issues. Increased agricultural development would involve widespread clearing of native deep rooted trees. The impact of this on the water balance, in particular on groundwater recharge and subsequent groundwater flow into the Daly River, is unknown. This project measures components of the water balance under native savanna vegetation and cleared land within the Daly catchment. In particular, the project provides preliminary estimates of evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge beneath these different land uses.,
