Description

The Northern Territory Government (NTG) established the Inquiry on 14 April 2014 to undertake a thorough investigation into hydraulic fracturing for hydrocarbon deposits in the NT and the potential effects on the environment. Among other things, the Chief Minister asked the Inquiry: • … to separate the proven evidence about environmental risk from the myths and to give an accurate picture based on science; and • … to provide recommendations on whether steps should be taken to mitigate any potential impacts from fracking. Hydraulic fracturing is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas. In the Territory the most common form of unconventional gas is shale gas, which will therefore be the primary focus of the Inquiry. The major recommendation, consistent with other Australian and International reviews, is that the environmental risks associated with hydraulic fracturing can be managed effectively subject to the creation of a robust regulatory regime.,
