Abstract
"This report summarises the relevant literature, highlighting some of the key aspects of Indigenous people’s relationship with fire, along with the implications of this relationship for wider Australian landscapes and biota, both past and present. It notes that Australia’s Indigenous people have a long tradition of systematically and purposefully using fire to manage the landscape, and that the positive impact of Indigenous landscape burning can be seen in the defining features and health of Australia’s terrestrial biodiversity and cultural-ecosystems. The review distills key lessons learned from the incorporation and translation of Indigenous knowledge into a range of fire management activities and programs and charts the key methods, processes and protocols for incorporating Indigenous knowledge into environmental management, including fire management." - Executive summary,
