The Coomalie Creek Airfield Hospital was constructed in 1942-45 by one section from the U.S. Army's D company, 2nd Battalion plus H Company and Headquarters, 3rd Battalion and the 135th Medical Regiment, U.S. Army. Situated 88km from Darwin and 11 km from Batchelor Airfield, this was the first hospital to be established and operated in the South West Pacific Area by an American unit. The hospital was capable of caring for 250 patients. Its headquarters organised the first systematic air American evacuation of casualties, which began on 10-6-1942. The hospital made extensive use of air evacuation using US and Australian military transport, and commercial land and Qantas flying-boat transport to Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Townsville.,
