Date:1990,
The hydrological and limnological factors which contributed to the death of 5000 fish during November 1987 in Donkey Camp Pool, the source of potable water for Katherine, are discussed. The quality of Donkey Camp Pool was reduced by the first runoff event for the 1987/88 wet season. A similar event nine days
later caused dramatic water quality changes; colour, turbidity, iron and manganese concentrations were at least an order of magnitude higher than typical dry season values. Coliform concentrations were similar to primary treated sewage. Furthermore, the Pool was thermally stratified and anoxic. The absence of oxygen, and possible synergistic copper and humic compound toxicity, caused the death of approximately 5000 fish. These conditions prevailed for about 10 days until the Pool was flushed by a major runoff event.,
